Coming from someone that isn’t too aware of Australian band, Jinja Safari, I was pleasantly surprised by frontman, Pepa Knight’s song called “Rahh!”, released way back in March as the introduction to his solo project. Sure, it was slightly off-center pop – which isn’t a bad thing – but there was something in the mix that made me want more; a secret ingredient that compulsively made me press the loop button.
Throughout his newly released EP, that same theme snakes its way through. Pretty much at all times I felt absolutely engulfed in euphoric sound. Even in times of relative quiet, the soundscape is constantly shifting, howling, thundering on.
Pepa manages to create this airy quality that reverberates and echoes back as if one is sitting in the middle of a massive landscape (which likely explains the artwork, perhaps). Be it via thumping drums, cascading harps, twanging sitar or anything in between, there is always something going on in the EP, it is almost saturated with sound.
It may not be for everyone, but something so different to what is playing in the mainstream nowadays, something that confidently doesn’t care about what people may think, is a bold move.
Hypnotized Vol. 1 EP is out now.
