Having taken a break after touring his last album, Sunny Side Up, the Scottish singer, Paolo Nutini has just unveiled a new song from his new album, Caustic Love.
And boy, it is a doozy of a song. A real contrast to the folksy vibes of it’s predecessor, Iron Sky is an emotionally explosive soul song; his heart is laid bare over longing saxophones, muted drums and moody guitars. Near the end, they have time to fit in an excerpt from Charlie Chaplin’s classic film, The Dictator. The production work is very similar to a Danger Mouse record and I really like this direction for the singer/songwriter after his long departure from performing. Already heralded by his musical peers including Adelle as “one of the best things they’ve ever seen”, whatever he is doing, hopefully more of this is going to be on his new album this year.
